How to keep up with your weight loss goals this autumn

Sarah Abston, RDN

Fall is such a great time of year. With the wonderful cool weather comes football tailgates, Halloween fun, and dinners with family and friends. It can be easy to lose ourselves in all the events of the season. It’s important to remember that we can still enjoy all the fun while prioritizing our health.

Here are a few ideas to keep you from FALLing off track:

Stick to a normal eating schedule.

Avoid skipping meals to “save calories” before going to a party or event. Instead, make sure to eat your normal meals and to get in plenty of protein to prevent being overly hungry when you get to the event.

Bring your own healthy snack or side.

Become the favorite guest by contributing to the festivities — try bringing whole grain chips and a low fat dip to the tailgate or some roasted root vegetables to your family dinner.

Drink plenty of water.

We often drink less water when the weather is cool than when it’s hot. Don’t forget to prioritize your water intake and stay hydrated.

Take regular walks.

The weather is perfect for walks this time of year. Take the opportunity to enjoy it by getting outside. This is a great way to make exercise feel fun.

Don’t stock up on candy.

Avoid overstocking Halloween candy. Try to give away any extras to the last few trick-or-treaters of the night. Save a small amount for yourself as an occasional treat :)

Practice good hygiene.

Make sure to cover your cough and wash your hands often to avoid getting a nasty cold or spreading it to others.

Get your flu shot.

Stay healthy by getting your annual flu vaccine. Ask your doctor if there are any other shots that you need to stay up-to-date with, too.

Enjoy time with your family and friends.

This is the perfect time to slow down and reconnect with family and friends. Connecting with others is great for our mental health!
